Personal Firearms Frequently Asked Questions

Does the collection need to be appraised?
In most instances, no appraisal is needed. The insured establishes the amount of insurance they wish to carry on each firearm. Individual items with a value in excess of $2,500 may require a recent appraisal or a bill of sale. Underwriters may require additional information for any item on your application.
Are Federal Firearms License holders eligible for sporting or collector insurance?
Yes. As long as the firearms they wish to insure are privately owned and not for commercial resale, their guns may be covered by sporting or collector insurance. Call 1-800-472-7771 for a special application.
Are the guns covered away from home?
Yes. Under the sporting insurance policy, the guns are covered anywhere in the world. Under the collector’s policy, they are insured at home, while on exhibit, or en route to exhibits anywhere in the United States and Canada.
Are the guns insured for full replacement cost?
Yes, provided the amount of coverage the insured designates on the insurance application for the affected items is sufficient to cover replacement cost.
Is the insurance restricted to firearms?
No, items of shooting related interest and military memorabilia may be included on the firearm schedule (i.e. swords/edged weapons, metals, antique ammo, ammo boxes, sighting scopes, shooting jackets, gun cases, etc.).
What if there is a loss?
If the loss involves possible theft, the insured must notify the police. Then notify Carpenter Insurance Service, Inc. we will promptly service their claim.
Are there any security requirements?
Depending on the value of the collection, a security system (burglar alarm) may be required.
